Hate's Progress

from "Winter" by Everett Darling

/

about

I guess this is the theme song of the anger stage of grief I was going through ... angry / sad... I owe a debt of gratitude to both Shakespeare and Roethke for some of the symbolic imagery.

lyrics

The possibilities, the blood, the breath, a human being
You have shattered and found virgin ground for evil deeds

Hate and enmity, smoldering and consuming
Hate me my repose, and leave me to wake and roam

The great hand breaks my bones
Wherefore is never told
And nothing will withhold
And nothing is foretold

Light rides around the globe
Hate's progress is seasonal

A woman in the water
I know where she is

The wide dark straddles the poles
The whole's but half in lunacy
The moon's lifted, bloodless gaze
The arc it makes on everything

The great hand breaks my bones
Wherefore is never told
And nothing will withhold
And nothing is foretold

Light stalks around the rows
Hate's progress is seasonal

A woman in the water
I know where she is
A woman in the water
I know where she is

A woman in the water
I know where she is
A woman in the water

All beneath the moon will fade
The moon itself will move away
All that in this world that's bought
Now or then returns to nought
In Time...
